Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Facility Laboratory

Summary:

The CBC NMR & EPR facility services The Ohio State University by offering user training and access to NMR and EPR spectrometers with various capabilities and features. This facility houses six solution-state NMR spectrometers, one solid-state NMR spectrometer, and one EPR spectrometer. All are available for use by trained users or in coordination with the NMR staff.

Instruments

  • Bruker Avance III 400MHz NMR Spectrometer ( NMR instrument )

    This 400 MHz (1H) solution NMR spectrometer is equipped with a SampleJet auto-sample changer and a 5mm BBFO probe, with a Z-gradient. This instrument us fully automated for drop-off sample submission and high throughput, queueing up to 576 samples. Undergraduate organic laboratory students have access to this system via course curriculum and individual research. Once trained, all researchers can submit a variety of NMR experiments – proton, carbon, phosphorus, fluorine, COSY, HSQC, HMBC, etc.

  • Bruker Avance IIIHD 600MHz NMR Spectrometer ( NMR instrument )

    This 600 MHz (1H) solution NMR spectrometer is equipped with a 5mm “Smart” broadband probe (BBFO), with Z-gradient, and is the most versatile instrument in the CBC NMR facility, capable of a large number of experiments ranging from routine experiments to advanced multi-dimensional and multi-nuclear NMR as well as variable temperature (-120 degC to +100 degC). Observable nuclei include, but is not limited to; 1H, 2H, 11B, 13C, 15N, 19F, 23Na, and 31P. This instrument includes an automated sample changer, which holds up to 24 NMR sample tubes.

  • Bruker Avance Neo 400MHz NMR Spectrometer ( NMR instrument )

    This 400 MHz (1H) solution NMR spectrometer is equipped with a Prodigy Cryoprobe for enhanced sensitivity and dual-receivers, as well as a SampleJet auto-sample changer. This instrument us fully automated for drop-off sample submission and high throughput, queueing up to 576 samples. This instrument is reserved for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers and offers an greater than two-fold sensitivity gain over the other 400MHz (1H) spectrometers in CBC. Researchers can submit a variety of 1D & 2D NMR experiments – 1H, 13C, 31P, COSY, HSQC, HMBC, etc.

  • Bruker BBO (H/BBF) 600MHz NMR Probe ( NMR probe )

    5mm Smart broadband H/BBF NMR probe contains a z-gradient and ATM (auto tune & match) unit. This is the primary probe for the Bruker Avance IIIHD 600MHz NMR Spectrometer. Bruker ID Z114607.

  • Bruker BBO (z-gradient, PLUS) 400MHz NMR Probe ( NMR probe )

    5mm PLUS BBO broadband NMR probe contains a z-gradient and ATM (auto tune & match) unit. This is the primary probe for the Bruker Avance IIIHD 600MHz NMR Spectrometer. Bruker ID Z114607.

  • Bruker ColdEdge WaveGuide Cryostat ( Cryogenic probe station )

    This WaveGuide Cryostat may cool down EPR samples to 5K using a helium recirculator and helium compressor. Sample temperature may be varied from 5K to room temperature.

  • Bruker DPX 250MHz NMR Spectrometer ( NMR instrument )

    This 250 MHz (1H) solution NMR spectrometer is equipped with a 5mm quarternary nuclei probe (QNP) for observing 1H, 11B, 13C and 31P nuclei. This is a fully manual, walk-up, free-of-charge instrument and trained researchers, within the CBC department, can run proton and carbon NMR experiments.

  • Bruker DPX 400MHz NMR Spectrometer ( NMR instrument )

    This 400 MHz (1H) solution NMR spectrometer is equipped with a 5mm broadband, inverse probe with a Z-gradient. This is a fully manual instrument and trained researchers can run a variety of 1D & 2D NMR experiments – 1H, 13C, 31P, COSY, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY, etc. Variable temperature experiments are also available on this instrument, by trained and experienced users only.

  • Bruker EMX-Plus EPR Spectrometer ( Electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer )

    This continuous-wave (CW), X-band (9.4 GHz) Bruker EMX-Plus EPR spectrometer is equipped with a ColdEdge cryostat for cryogen-free liquid-helium temperature regulation, down to 5 K. Operation at room temperature and is also available. Samples may be illuminated in the resonant cavity during operation.

  • Bruker Fourier 80 Benchtop NMR Spectrometer ( NMR instrument )

    This 80 MHz (1H) solution NMR benchtop spectrometer is a cryogen-free magnet and includes a pulsed-field gradient and an internal lock. Its simple design and pre-configured software, GoScan, is intended for simple, routine laboratory use and for novice NMR users. CBC researchers and undergraduates will have an opportunity for training and tutorials on this instrument for running a variety of 1D & 2D, 1H and 13C NMR experiments.

  • Bruker Prodigy BBO/H-F 400MHz NMR Cryoprobe ( NMR probe )

    5mm BBO/H-F broadband NMR cryoprobe contains a z-gradient and ATM (auto tune & match) unit. This cryoprobe is liquid nitrogen cooled for enhanced sensitivtiy. Samples are studied at room temperature. This is the primary probe for the Bruker Avance Neo 400MHz NMR Spectrometer. Bruker ID Z149000.

  • Bruker QNP H/CBP 250MHz NMR Probe ( NMR probe )

    5mm Smart broadband H/BBF NMR probe contains a z-gradient and ATM (auto tune & match) unit. This is the primary probe for the Bruker Avance IIIHD 600MHz NMR Spectrometer. Bruker ID Z114607.

  • Bruker QNP H/FPC 400MHz NMR Probe ( NMR probe )

    5mm QNP H/FPC NMR probe contains a z-gradient and detects 1H, 13C, 19F and 31P. This is the primary probe for the Bruker DPX 400MHz NMR Spectrometer. Bruker ID Z8400.

  • Bruker SampleCase AutoSampler ( NMR instrument )

    This SampleCase autosampler is a carousel with space for 24 samples for automated NMR experiments. This autosampler is installed on the Bruker Avance IIIHD 600MHz NMR Spectrometer and may be used in automation during a user's reservation.

  • Bruker SampleJet AutoSampler ( NMR instrument )

    This SampleJet autosampler is a capable of queuing up to 576 samples for automated NMR experiments. This autosampler is installed on the Bruker Avance III 400MHz NMR Spectrometer for 24/7 access and use.

  • Bruker SampleJet AutoSampler ( NMR instrument )

    This SampleJet autosampler is a capable of queuing up to 576 samples for automated NMR experiments. This autosampler is installed on the Bruker Avance Neo 400MHz NMR Spectrometer for 24/7 access and use.

  • Varian 1.6mm BioSolids HCN Fast Magic-Angle Spinning (MAS) 500 MHz NMR Probe ( NMR probe )

    1.6mm BioSolids HCN MAS NMR probe is a solid-state NMR magic-angle spinning probe for 1.6mm sample rotors. This probe is tuned to 1H, 13C & 15N and is optimized for studying biomolecules. This fast-spinning MAS probe offers increased resolution for multidimensional experiments.

  • Varian 3.2mm BioSolids HCN Magic-Angle Spinning (MAS) 500 MHz NMR Probe ( NMR probe )

    3.2mm BioSolids HCN MAS NMR probe is a solid-state NMR magic-angle spinning probe for 3.2mm sample rotors. This probe is tuned to 1H, 13C & 15N and is optimized for studying biomolecules.

  • Varian 3.2mm T3 HXY Magic-Angle Spinning (MAS) 500 MHz NMR Probe ( NMR instrument )

    3.2mm T3 HXY MAS NMR probe is a solid-state NMR magic-angle spinning probe for 3.2mm sample rotors. This three-channel probe may be operated in dual-mode or triple-mode for the detection of broadband nuclei: commonly 13C, 15N, 27Al & 29Si.

  • Varian VNMRS 500MHz Wide-bore NMR Spectrometer ( NMR instrument )

    This system is configured for the acquisition of solid-state NMR experiments. The probes for this system are wide-bore magic angle spinning (MAS) including a 3.2 mm T3HXY, a 3.2 mm biosolids, and a fast-spinning 1.6 mm biosolids probe. A large array of experiments are available including direct polarization (DPMAS), cross polarization (CPMAS) in either double or triple mode (1H, 13C, 27Al, 29Si, 15N, etc.) as well as a number of relaxation measurements (T1, T2, T1rho). This instrument is optimized for characterization of natural abundance materials such as polymers, food-based products, COFs, modified silicates and aluminates, isotropically labeled proteins, biopolymers via structural analysis and/or dynamic studies.

  • Solid-State NMR Data Acqusition ( Data analysis service )

    Direct polarization (DPMAS) or cross polarization (CPMAS) experiments are recorded for a user's solid-state sample by the facility manager. Available nuclei for observation include, but are not limited to; 13C, 15N, 27Al, & 29Si. Data is acquire on the Varian VNMRS 500MHz spectrometer on either a 3.2 mm T3HXY, a 3.2 mm biosolids, or a fast-spinning 1.6 mm biosolids probe. These experiments are optimized for the characterization of natural abundance materials such as polymers, food-based products, COFs, modified silicates and aluminates, isotropically labeled proteins, biopolymers via structural analysis and/or dynamic studies.
