Founded in December 2012 by a collection of new and energetic Ohio State faculty, postdocs and staff, the STEAM Factory is a diverse and inclusive grass-roots network in the Ohio State community that facilitates creative and interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation and dissemination.
To provide opportunities for collaboration that enhance and drive innovation within all research disciplines;
To provide linkages and interdisciplinary interactions between Ohio State departments and colleges; and
To increase the public awareness, understanding and impact of Ohio State research.
Behind the Scenes is an event series that connects early-career faculty with seasoned academics, providing an inside look into the many facets of academic life. From traversing tenure to building a network, this program provides invaluable insight into the complex processes that come with university career progression. It's also a great opportunity to connect with fellow faculty members, be they early-career or senior.
Since 2010, the Columbus Science Pub has been dedicated to hosting speakers from across the fields of scientific study at no charge to the public. We've hosted scientists and researchers from The Ohio State University, The Kinsey Institute, Harvard University, Battelle, The Columbus Zoo and many more. Our speakers have covered a diverse range of topics from the neurobiology of zombies to the science of fracking to ethnomusicology. By connecting the Columbus community with experts who use science in their daily lives, we grow science literacy. We present a new talk every month. Speakers are invited based on requests from our audience, science topics in the news, and recommendations from the Columbus community.
STEAM Exchanges are monthly themed interdisciplinary seminars that provide multiple faculty perspectives to foster opportunities for cross-collaboration between members. This program is intended to facilitate both knowledge and interactions related to current and on-going faculty research here at Ohio State. STEAM Exchanges are intended to be small (less than 40 people) and informal to allow for increased interaction and lively discussion between STEAM members and their invited colleagues and guests. Our goals include: Discuss current research endeavors, bringing multiple disciplinary perspectives to bear on a single issue with the purpose of identifying opportunities for cross-collaboration Create specialty programming to facilitate interdisciplinary faculty collaborations, e.g. Faculty Research Speed Seminars and Describe your Research in 60 Seconds Share experiences and transfer of tools and resources to enhance teaching methods, e.g. research commercialization, digital publishing and course creation, incorporation of technology into the classroom, and utilization of remote lectures.
From our inception, STEAM Factory has been dedicated to advancing the research and larger collaborative efforts of faculty and staff at The Ohio State University. In accordance with this mission, workshops, trainings and events are often offered. These special events typically emphasize concepts of networking and team science while seeking to enhance the attendee's ability in areas such as research, communication and dissemination.
